Despite the name, Panama hats have never been made in Panama. They are entirely Ecuadorian — born on the western coast of Ecuador, where toquilla palm grows in a uniquely ideal climate: salt air from the Pacific meeting equatorial sunshine. For centuries, artisans in towns like Montecristi and Cuenca have woven these hats by hand, passing the craft down through generations. The name is a historical accident.
Every Ecua-Andino hat begins in the same place: a young toquilla palm shoot, harvested before the leaves have opened. What follows is an entirely manual process — no machines, no shortcuts.
